PostSubject: WHAT IS ECTOPLASM?   Sat Oct 03, 2009 12:24 am

ECTOPLASM IS A TERM THAT WAS COINED DURING THE MODERN SPIRITUALIST MOVEMENT (1840'S TO 1920'S). THE TERM ECTOPLASM WAS GIVEN TO THE SUBSTANCE THAT WAS SECRETED BY MEDIUMS DURING SEANCES, AND WAS CLAIMED TO BE SPIRITUAL ENERGY, OR AN ETHEREAL SUBSTANCES THAT DENOTED THE MATERIALIZATION OF THE SPIRIT WORLD. DURING THE HEY DAYS OF THE SPIRITUALIST MOVEMENT, ECTOPLASM WAS ALSO SAID TO HAVE PSYCHOKENISIS ENABLING FACTORS, WHICH WOULD CAUSE TABLES TO TURN, LIGHTS TO SWAY OR OTHER TYPE MOVEMENTS OF THE INANIMATE WHEN IT WAS DRAPED OVER THE OBJECTS.

AS POPULAR CULTURE TOOK HOLD OF THE WORD, THE DESCRIPTION OF IT HAS CHANGED TO INCLUDE A SUBSTANCE THAT IS MORE LIKE A LIQUID OF HIGH VISCOSITY OR SMOKEY MIST LIKE SUBSTANCE THAT APPEARS WHEN A GHOST MANIFESTS ITSELF (SOMETIMES).

DESPITE EARLY SAMPLES OF ECTOPLASM TURNING OUT TO BE VERY EARTHY SUBSTANCES, SUCH AS CHEESECLOTH AND CHIFFON, AND NO SAMPLES POINTING TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN NON PARANORMAL ORIGINS, THE BELIEF OF ECTOPLASM LIVES ON TODAY.
